Two new exhibitions present works by the artists of the Block residency at Liebling Haus in March-June 2023. The fates of Haim Sokol and Yasha Rozov merged through their residency in the “model apartment” and their preoccupation with the real and imagined space between the personal and the civil. The period in which the works for the exhibition were created can be split in two: their work in the studio during the residency – a time of national protests and accompanying social distractions which seeped into the residency process itself; and the time since October 7 – days that altered the relationship between the personal and the civil in unprecedented ways.
The complex relations between the personal and the civil manifest in Haim Sokol’s ongoing preoccupation with immigration, alienation, and uprooting. Stemming from his personal experience, these questions were expropriated from their original context and have gained a national and collective dimension. Yasha Rozov’s works set out initially to examine public space as a place where civilians are policed, defined and controlled. During the work on the exhibition, these ideas took on a personal aspect within the domestic space of their display. His works undermine the familiar sense of home and highlight lurking threats and dangers that might make it unsafe.
