Everything is Architecture and We Are All Architects #2 – Corridor Talk
The corridor, which initially served as a passage for servants in 17th-century castles, has transformed over time into what can be described as “streets in the sky” in Brutalist architecture. This evolution has culminated in the “sink corridor” seen in the facades of contemporary Japanese housing, revealing insights into how we live today.
This meeting will explore the changes in private living spaces from late modernism to the present. We will analyze the private home concept through various lenses, including globalization, technology, work, economics, and gender, considering transformations over the last five decades. During the meeting, we will review significant examples from Israel and worldwide that have advanced the discipline and sparked controversies. Key topics will include the skipping corridor in the "house as machine" concept (drawing parallels between a car and a house), the brotherhood corridor that introduced modernism to the USA – only to contribute to its decline two decades later – and finally, the unexpected connection between these elements and Kanye West, who revealed his design for a house in perfect timing with his campaign for the US presidency.
Host: Arch. Hila Shemer. Architecture Critic & Lecturer, Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem

This meeting is part of the lecture series “Everything is Architecture, and We Are All Architects,” which will be held at Liebling House’s Café Lev. During this series, we will examine contemporary architecture in our regions and worldwide through the lenses of politics, gender, economics, globalization, crisis, war, and peace. We will explore the ability of the architectural discipline to drive change – from urban environments and public buildings to the most intimate space – our private homes. Utilizing tools from both within and outside the field of architecture, we will envision a possible future.
